From March 22–26, nine CU Denver students traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a week centered on Salsa, Soul, & Spirit: an exploration of culture, community, and connection. Throughout the trip, students engaged in meaningful service, participated in leadership development, and immersed themselves in the rich history and traditions of the region.

This experience is designed to go beyond a traditional trip. Students spent time building community with one another, reflecting on their values, and considering how they can contribute to strong and connected communities. Through both service and intentional learning spaces, participants were encouraged to think critically, listen actively, and engage with curiosity.

As part of their learning, students engaged with Salsa, Soul, and Spirit: Leadership for a Multicultural Age by Juana Bordas, using the text as a framework to explore leadership through culture, community, and identity. This helped students connect their service experiences and reflections to a broader understanding of values-based leadership.

In addition to their service work, students explored Albuquerque’s cultural landscape. Learning from local spaces, histories, and communities that bring the “Salsa, Soul, & Spirit” theme to life. These moments helped students better understand the importance of place, culture, and community in shaping lived experiences.

For many of our participants, this was their first time traveling in this way and engaging in service while also being invited to reflect, grow, and lead. The impact of this experience continues beyond the trip, as students return to campus with new perspectives, deeper connections, and a stronger sense of purpose.
