National History Day in Colorado (NHDC) is one of the largest and most impactful academic programs in the state, engaging more than 10,000 students annually in authentic historical research, critical thinking, literacy, communication, and civic learning. Through a network of 10 regional contests, a statewide contest hosted by CU Denver, and advancement opportunities to the National Contest, students develop the skills needed to become informed citizens, thoughtful leaders, and engaged members of their communities.
This past year, NHDC reached new heights. More than 600 students advanced to the State Contest, 54 Colorado students represented our state at the National Contest, and several students earned national finalist honors, special awards, and national recognition for projects exploring topics ranging from civil rights and transportation equity to scientific innovation and LGBTQ+ history. Beyond the competitions, students gained confidence, strengthened their research and writing abilities, learned to evaluate evidence, and discovered how history helps us understand the challenges and opportunities facing our world today.
Also, NHDC invests deeply in Colorado teachers and educators. Through statewide professional development, curriculum resources, educator institutes, and partnerships with museums, historians, and cultural organizations, teachers are empowered to bring meaningful, project-based learning into their classrooms. From new civics-focused curriculum supported by Colorado 150 initiatives to award-winning resources on Colorado history, women’s history, LGBTQ+ history, labor history, and medical innovation, NHDC is helping educators inspire the next generation of leaders.
As we launch our second annual Back to School, Forward to History campaign, we invite our community to help us accelerate this incredible momentum. Your support helps provide student access scholarships, classroom resources, teacher training, contest experiences, curriculum development, and opportunities for students from every corner of Colorado to participate in National History Day.
Most importantly, your gift is an investment in young people. Every student who researches a topic, analyzes evidence, defends a thesis, and presents their work is building the skills necessary to become tomorrow’s civic, business, nonprofit, and community leaders.
Please consider making a gift today. Every dollar donated will be matched, doubling your impact and helping even more Colorado students discover the power of history, research, and civic engagement. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn from the past and help shape a better future.
